I also have a chrome Craftsman timing light from the late sixties/early seventies that still works very well. I installed a Ford style starter solenoid in the engine area as a cold start relay. Color me not impressed by modern technology. I think that I'll keep my old Craftsman as my main light and put the new one to bed until I need the fancy advance feature for something. Too complex, buttons to push, things to set, etc. Honestly, I'd like to have my money back. Last year I had timing light envy and purchased some new fangled light with the advance timing feature. Years ago the inductive pickup magnet broke and I scotch taped it back together. I'm guessing I got this in the early 1970's. All chrome with the new modern inductive pickup. The leads/sensor is interchangeable on all the Craftsman lights, chromed steel case, bright Xenon light, made in USA. surprisingly, due to the delay in the triggering circuit, timing lights can be inaccurate and the Craftsman was most accurate. then i bought a Craftsman dialback advance light that is also excellent. great article in Hot Rod magazine rating various timing lights, it is dated but i bought 2 on eBay as a result of the article. That Craftsman timing light is one of the most accurate made. Just connect the red clamp to the big post on the alternator - that cable goes to the battery. Sounds like the light I use (about 30 years old now). I found this MSD tech support article: Timing Light I've done a little more searching and reading about MSD ignitions and timing lights since last visiting this thread. As you guys know, this thread of action was derailed in a dramatic way by my FE misadventure that Winter. Without the the dial back you are trying to read the little numbers and distinguish between the (rather small usually) marks.Īfter all this time, I'm looking to get my hands on a timing light again.
